Difference Between Mushroom Extracts and Non-Extracts
Mushroom Extracts (Powders)
Concentrated forms of the mushroom's active compounds.
Achieved through processes like hot water extraction or alcohol extraction.
Higher bioavailability of beta glucans, polysaccharides, and triterpenes.
Solubility varies - Mostly Soluble
Non-Extracts (Powders)
Contain the entire mushroom without concentrating the active compounds or breaking the cell wall.
Retain all components of the mushroom, including fiber and proteins.
Active compounds are present in lower concentrations.
May be more difficult to digest.
Beneficial in different ways but less potent by volume compared to extracts.
Less soluble over all.
Difference Between Fruiting Body and Mycelium
Fruiting Body
The above-ground portion of the fungi, commonly recognized as the cap and stem.
Contains high concentrations of polysaccharides, beta glucans, and other bioactive compounds.
Mycelium
The root-like network of fungal threads that grows underground.
Contains beneficial compounds like beta glucans and triterpenes but in lower concentrations compared to the fruiting body.
Possesses unique compounds such as extracellular polysaccharides and secondary metabolites.
Commercially grown on substrates like sawdust or grains, which are present in the final product in various amounts.
Final product may have diluted "mushroom" aspects due to the high amount of substrate.
Which you choose comes down to what you are formulating and what you want to put on your label. Fruiting body material carries a higher concentration of the target compounds per gram. Mycelium is grown on a substrate such as sawdust or grain, and some of that substrate stays in the finished powder, so the same weight carries less mushroom.
Neither one is wrong. But the difference is real, it belongs on your label, and it should be reflected in what you pay. Tell us your target spec below and we will tell you exactly what you would be getting.
